This programme prepares secondary school teachers of history and social studies. It covers Somali history, the history of the Horn of Africa, Islamic history and civilisation, and world history, together with geography, civics and citizenship, introductory economics, sociology and anthropology. Subject content is integrated with educational foundations,
educational psychology, curriculum studies, methods of teaching the humanities and social sciences, educational assessment, and the use of primary sources and local oral history in the classroom. The programme gives attention to peace education, civic responsibility and social cohesion, reflecting national reconstruction priorities, and culminates in supervised teaching practice, an extended teaching internship and a research project.
Career opportunities. Graduates teach history and social studies in secondary schools, and progress into curriculum development, school leadership, civic education and peacebuilding programmes, research and postgraduate study.
