The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery produces competent, compassionate and community-oriented medical doctors for Somalia, to an internationally recognised standard. The programme opens with a Foundation Year that establishes the basic sciences and academic skills, moves through the pre-clinical sciences of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology and microbiology, and then into clinical training in internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, psychiatry, community medicine, radiology and anaesthesia. Learning is delivered through lectures, small-group and problem-based sessions, skills-laboratory simulation and progressive supervised clinical practice in the University teaching hospital and affiliated health facilities. The final year is a full-time Core Clinical Internship in which students take graduated responsibility for patient care under supervision. The curriculum comprises 84 courses and 5,600 contact hours.

Career opportunities.

Graduates are prepared for internship registration and practice as medical officers in hospitals and health centres, and for postgraduate specialty training, public health and clinical research.
