The Bachelor of Dental Surgery prepares dental surgeons able to diagnose, prevent and treat diseases of the teeth, mouth and jaws. The programme integrates the basic biomedical sciences with dental sciences — oral anatomy, oral biology, oral pathology and oral medicine — and moves from pre-clinical laboratory practice on phantom heads into progressive supervised patient care. Clinical training covers restorative dentistry and endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontology, prosthodontics, paediatric dentistry, orthodontics, dental radiology and community and preventive dentistry, delivered in the University dental teaching clinic. Students complete all ten semesters, satisfy theoretical and clinical assessments, and undertake a research project. The curriculum comprises 243 credit units, 66 courses and 4,272 contact hours.

Career opportunities. Graduates practise as general dental surgeons in hospitals, public dental services and private clinics, and progress to postgraduate specialty training in fields such as oral surgery, orthodontics and prosthodontics.
