The Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine prepares veterinarians able to safeguard animal health, livestock productivity and public health through a One Health approach. Livestock is central to the Somali economy and to household livelihoods. The programme covers veterinary anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathology, microbiology and parasitology; clinical diagnosis, veterinary medicine and surgery; animal reproduction and obstetrics; animal nutrition and herd and flock health management; and the control of zoonotic and transboundary animal diseases. It gives particular attention to meat and milk hygiene, food safety and veterinary public health. Students practise in the University veterinary teaching clinic and undertake ambulatory field attachments with pastoral and peri-urban livestock communities, and complete a research project.

Career opportunities. Graduates practise as veterinarians in clinical and field settings, in livestock health and production programmes, in meat and milk inspection and food safety, in animal disease surveillance and quarantine, and with government, non-governmental and United Nations agencies.
