The Bachelor of Science in Public Health produces practitioners able to deliver promotive, preventive and rehabilitative health services matched to the needs of Somali communities. The programme covers epidemiology and biostatistics, health promotion and behaviour change, environmental and occupational health, communicable disease control, the growing burden of non-communicable disease, maternal and child health, nutrition, health systems and policy, health programme planning, and outbreak preparedness and response. Community fieldwork runs throughout the programme, and students complete a research project and a supervised internship with a health authority, hospital or nongovernmental organisation. The curriculum comprises 230 credit units, 63 courses and 4,000 contact hours.

Career opportunities. Graduates work in disease surveillance and outbreak response, health promotion, programme management and monitoring and evaluation with government health authorities, hospitals, non-governmental organisations and United Nations agencies.

The academic year at AMU spans 16 weeks, divided into two semesters.  (14 weeks for tuition and two weeks for examinations).
