B.Sc. in English Language
al hayat MEDICAL UNIVERSITY >B.Sc. in English Language
This programme prepares secondary school teachers of English. It develops advanced competence in listening, speaking, reading and writing, together with the academic study of language and literature: phonetics and phonology, morphology and syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics, and selected English and world literature. These are integrated with applied linguistics, second-language acquisition, English language teaching methodology, materials design and adaptation, and language testing and assessment, alongside educational foundations, psychology and classroom management. Because English is the language of instruction in Somali higher education and in the health professions, the programme gives particular attention to academic writing and to teaching English for academic purposes. It culminates in supervised teaching practice, an extended teaching internship and a research project.
Career opportunities. Graduates teach English in secondary schools and language institutes, and progress into English for academic purposes teaching, curriculum and materials development, translation, teacher training and postgraduate study.
