Bachelor of Sciences in Midwifery

The Bachelor of Science in Midwifery prepares skilled midwives able to care for women throughout pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period, and to recognise and manage obstetric and newborn emergencies. Given Somalia’s maternal and newborn mortality burden, the programme gives particular weight to antenatal care, safe and clean delivery, emergency obstetric and newborn care, family planning and reproductive health, newborn resuscitation and community midwifery, alongside the underpinning basic sciences. Students practise extensively in the skills laboratory before undertaking supervised clinical placements in maternity units and community settings, and complete a research project in the final year. The curriculum comprises 232 credit units, 68 courses and 4,030 contact hours.

Career opportunities. Graduates practise as registered midwives in maternity units, health centres and community programmes, and progress into midwifery education, reproductive health programme management and postgraduate study.

Prospective students must meet the following requirements:

1. Completion of Secondary School: You must have finished secondary school with at least a 50% overall average.
2. Certificates: Submit both the original and a copy of your secondary school certificate.
3. Photographs: Provide six (6) passport-sized photos with a white background.
4. Admission Test/Interview: Pass the required admission interview and/or test.
5. Registration Fee: Pay a registration fee of  $35

The academic year at AMU spans 16 weeks, divided into two semesters.  (14 weeks for tuition and two weeks for examinations).

The first semester starts in September.
